The train bridge over Mantua Creek in Paulsboro, southern New Jersey, collapsed around 7 a.m., according to the South Jersey Times, sending three tank cars into the water — one of which is reportedly leaking vinyl chloride, an industrial chemical.

Short-term exposure to vinyl chloride can cause dizziness, drowsiness and headaches. Chronic exposure can cause liver damage.

Mantua Creek leads to the Delaware River, which provides drinking water for 17 million people across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Coast Guard is responding to the accident. All major roadways into the town have been closed, and a nearby high school is on lockdown. Residents are being told to shelter in place.
