Before digital cameras and video , adult films were shot on film, and featured plots (well, “plots”), and art direction, and taglines. Here are the posters for five of the classics from the 1970s.
1972. The story of a woman with her clitoris in her throat. Starring Linda Lovelace, (Linda Susan Boreman, from The Bronx), who later in life became a very vocal spokesperson for the anti-porn movement. Roger Ebert reviewed it, giving it no-stars. "It is all very well and good for Linda Lovelace, the star of the movie, to advocate sexual freedom; but the energy she brings to her role is less awesome than discouraging. If you have to work this hard at sexual freedom, maybe it isn't worth the effort."
1972. Starring Ivory Snow Girl Marilyn Chambers. When the film was released, it was accompanied by a press release that described Chambers as "99 and 44/100's % impure." Procter & Gamble was not amused.
1973. Now this had a plot. Pure woman commits suicide, can't get into Heaven because of suicide, but she gets the chance to return to earth to live a life of lust, however, when her time runs out, she is condemned to live for the rest of eternity in a room with a sexually disinterested man who would rather catch imaginary flies.
1976. Considered the first big budget adult movie, it was shot in Paris, Rome, and New York, and featured a music score! It is, loosely, based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. It is also noteworthy for being the first porn movie to feature female-on-male pegging (according to Wikipedia).
