Here's a simple hack to make YouTube videos play on a loop. Sort of like a video GIF. [Updated]
[UPDATE: So it appears that YouTube has changed something since this was first posted to counteract the looping hack.]
Whoa, that video loops forever! How'd they do that?
With a simple hack, you too can make YouTube videos that loop endlessly. Here's how...
1.
You can do this in any video editing application as well as applications that play video, such as Quicktime.
Trimming the video down to the second mark is the most straightforward way to make it loop-able but it's not the only option.
Videos will also loop if the extra frames over the second mark are cleanly divisible by the frame rate of the video. You're looking to have a total amount of extra frames that, when divided by the frame rate, have a single number in the tenth position, e.g. 0.1, 0.5, etc.
For instance: If your frame rate is 30, you can have 3 extra frames since 3/30 = .1. If your frame rate is 24, you can have 12 extra frames since 12/24 = .5.
2.
Duh.
3.
Once you've uploaded the video, you'll add an annotation that makes it pause for a split second at the very end (because the video doesn't have any excess frames at the end, the YouTube player will skip back to the beginning).
Go to Edit your video and click on the Annotations section. In Annotations, add a Pause annotation.
To the right of the video player in the Annotations section, edit your new Pause annotation so that the duration is 0:00:00.1 (it's the lowest you can go) and click the Start time up to the very end of the video (the highest you can go).
